This report provides a brief statistical overview of where and when citizen scientists have been participating in Mosquito Alert. It is not intended to show estimates of mosquito populations or risk levels, only participation itself. (Thus, for example, the reporting figures shown here do not distinguish between validated reports and unvalidated reports.) The report is updated daily at approximately 3 am CET. Note that some of the figures are interactive: more information can be obtained from them by hovering the cursor over elements, zooming in and out etc.

Registrations

One way of measuring participation is to look at the number of times people have “registered” with Mosquito Alert, defined as transmitting their consent to participate in the project. (Once a person installs the app, they must provide informed consent before they are able to use it, and this consent is transmitted to the Mosquito Alert server.) The number of registrations is not an exact measure of the number of participants, since some people may end up registering multiple times. This happens if they install the app, consent, then delete it and install and consent again. It also happened for all participants who upgraded to the new version of the app at the end of 2020, since their previous (anonymous) user UUIDs were not retained. To date there have been a total of 530128. The following charts show the time series of daily and cumulative registrations to date.

Reports by Country

To date Mosquito Alert has received a total of 316981 reports from 98763 participants in 194 countries. Of these, 170218 (53.7%) are reports of adult mosquitoes, 30440 (9.6%) are reports of mosquito breeding sites, and 116323 (36.7%) are reports of mosquito bites. Mosquito Alert has received a total of 160686 reports containing photographs, representing 80.08% of the total adult and site reports combined (these are the report types to which photographs can be attached). Of these, 129223 are adult reports (75.92% of the total adult reports) and 29577 are site reports (97.16% of the total site reports). Of the 129223 adult reports with photos, 102909 (79.64%) have been validated through the Digital Entolab system to date.

The following chart shows the number of reports of each type by country, with bite reports in red, adult mosquito reports in yellow, and breeding site reports in blue. Only countries from which at least 50 reports in total have been sent are displayed.

Not displayed in this plot are 516 countries from which at least 1 but less than 50 reports have been received. These countries are as follows:

Afghanistan, Andorra, Angola, Antarctica, Armenia, Aruba, Bahrain, Belarus, Benin, Bhutan, Botswana, Brunei, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, China, Cook Islands, Cuba, Curaçao, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Djibouti, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Fiji, Gabon, Gambia, Greenland, Grenada, Guernsey, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Iceland, Ireland, Ivory Coast, Japan, Jersey, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Malta, Mauritania, Mauritius, Moldova, Monaco, Mongolia, Montenegro, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Niger, North Korea, Norway, Oman, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Saint Helena, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Martin, Samoa, San Marino, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Sint Maarten, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Suriname, São Tomé and Principe, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkmenistan, Vatican, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe, eSwatini.

Time Series Area Plot for High-Participation Countries

Focusing just on the 10 countries from which the most reports have been sent to date, the following area plot shows the total number of reports over time, since the start of the project in 2014, sent from the 10 countries with the highest number of reports to date.

Time Series Stream Plot for High-Participation Countries

Focusing again on the 10 countries from which the most reports have been sent to date, the following stream plot provides another way of visualizing the total number of reports over time sent from the 10 countries with the highest number of reports to date. In this case includes only the past year so that the trends can be seen in more detail.

Sampling Effort

Mosquito Alert also estimates sampling effort: the expected number of participants who send at least one report from a given 0.025° grid cell on a given day (the expected-value measure, rather than the simple probability of at least one report). Summed across grid cells and days, it can be read as the expected number of participants sending at least one report. Worldwide, the cumulative sampling effort to date is 53,461 (across 162,179 grid cells and 1,904,740 participant-days), recorded between 2014-06-14 and 2026-07-14.

The following chart shows the 30 countries with the highest cumulative sampling effort to date.

The following plots show the worldwide sampling effort over time: the cumulative total first, then the cumulative total broken down by the 10 countries with the highest sampling effort.

Operating System Usage

We do not track the operating system from which participants first register, but we do track the operating system from which they send reports. Of the total of 316981 that Mosquito Alert has received to date 225533 (71%) were sent from Android devices and 91448 (29%) were sent from iOS devices. The following plot shows the percentage sent from Android devices for each country from which at least 100 reports have been sent.

The following plots shows the time series of reports sent from iOS and Android devices from the start of the project in 2014 to date. Daily reports are shown first, followed by cumulative totals.
